Airplanes

When faced with danger
We must stare it in the face
And scream.
It is in our human nature.
Now run,
But when it’s a man we never can.
Arrivals and departures
They ask us why we always leave them
And then come back again.
We tell them,
The air felt so empty,
He felt so empty,
He needed someone to fill that space.
I cried when I left you,
I told myself I’d do it for you.
If it didn’t hurt,
I’d hurt for you,
Chivalrous, I held the umbrella over your head,
While we walked in the rain,
My hair soaking wet.
You never said thank you,
So I started to dance.
Maybe then you’d notice that,
Departures don’t wait,
I could leave at any moment.
And the rain could wash you away.
You did not.
So like taxes and high prices,
The prettier I became,
The more you hated me.
All the water I’ve soaked in from the rain
That could wash you away,
Has only made me grow taller.
I never slip
When I dance in the rain.
Ballet like,
You kept me on my toes.
Tap,
My footsteps have always been so loud.
Contemporary,
I levitate
When the sun comes out.
At last,
I realize
You didn’t even know it was raining.
I drop the umbrella and run..
Look up and let the water run into my eyes.
God,
It feels so good to cry.
But I’m the only one out here,
Now that you’ve washed away.
Everyone is safe in the houses they built for themselves.
Everyone else trickles down into the gutters.
I wasted my time
Holding an umbrella,
While the bricks sat and rotted away.
Build child,
Build.
Let yourself in,
The sun is inside
Just flip the switch.
You’re so tall now,
It doesn’t matter just build the ceiling higher.
High enough so your plane fits in there too.
Arrivals and departures,
Welcome home.
You’re late,
But you’re here.
