10 Feet Taller

In the warmth of her arms, I was safe

Her words with their reassuring ways.

Until oceans rose with suffocating waves

Rained down with the scary truth of today.

Nothing will ever feel right anymore

With doctors coming in like revolving doors

Saying big words like chemo and tumors

Meanwhile my heart grew sore

Nothing will ever feel same

Because mama has a cancer to maim.

With her breath too shallow and tight

She says, “I’ll be alright.”

My heart grew heavy like an iron ball

But I grew a whole 10 feet taller that Fall
