The Shadow War
I was 15 when the bombs exploded in the sky.
I didn’t know what to think at first.
First, there was the mortal terror.
Then the everlasting despair.
The whole world had gone to shit.
War after war,
death all around
and still most people it seemed
were only interested in themselves.
Going in and out
day by day
weaving in and out of time
We were a bunch of narcissists
and most of us
didn’t even know why.
It all came to a head a month ago
when we started getting the threats
of death
and destruction.
The war in eastern Europe
had finally spilled over into the US.
It was a senseless war
an angry war.
A war based upon one man’s desire to rule everything.
And it had come here to our land.
The people fled from their land and came here.
in our narcissism,
we turned our backs and grumbled.
We didn’t want the responsibility,
the trouble.
Then the world was set on fire
and nothing was the same again.
There was retaliation for helping the “other side” during the war.
So they attacked.
Bombs exploded in the sky
Fallout rained upon the Earth
All because we made a choice to help.
We were attacked up North because of our shipyards
sending supplies for the war.
We only saw it on TV
the screaming and the running
The people turned to shadow and dust.
We thought we were safe.
away from the horror
away from the lack of humanity
Safely tucked away in our home
away from the horrors of war.
Little did we know,
this was only the beginning
of our nightmare.
Humanity’s strife in the darkness.
