How do you communicate with others? Maybe it's through texts, tweets, or sharing pics on Instagram. But when's the last time you wrote a letter? We're talkin' real pouring your heart out, leaving all your emotions there on the page kind of letter. Been a while? Maybe you've never even written one before. Letters are special because unlike a typical conversation where people talk back and forth, when you write a letter you get the chance to say everything that you want to before getting a reply. Plus, there are only two rules to writing letters. First, they have to be addressed to someone of something. And second, you have to sign it otherwise anyone could've written it!

Write a letter in the form of a poem to anyone/anything of your choice.

The subject of a letter can be anything you choose. It could be something abstract like an emotion or idea or it could be something tangible like an object. Your letter can be addressed to someone in your life or someone you've never even met like an author you admire or a political figure. You can write letters to your fears, your insecurities, or someone from the past who you've never expressed your true feelings towards. The possibilities are endless! Letters are a great way of checking in with yourself and seeing how you feel about someone or something, which can be really cathartic and even lead to closure. Letters become so much more than communicating with the other person or object but instead more about communicating with yourself. So get writing and share your letter poem with us for your chance to win.

  1. The basic requirements are this: (1) you are 25 years of age (or younger), and (2) you are a current or former high school student who will attend or is attending college within the U.S. or its territories.
  2. Add an original poem to Power Poetry by Monday, February 12, 2018. You'll need to register as a member of our community first.
