You May Know Me

You may know me,
But you can’t see the pain.
You can’t see my struggles
And you can’t see my strife.
For my identity, it isn’t superficial,
It’s an identity that is rooted deep,
Below your hateful words
And your hateful religions.
Beneath your oppression
And buried under your misconceptions.
Just because I love another man,
It doesn’t mean that I am lesser.
My skin isn’t different
And I don’t come from a foreign country.
But the hatred is still the same.
The signs,
The protests,
The silencing of my people.

You may know me,
But I wont let you define me.
