'When I'm By Myself, I Forget That Today Was Yesterday's Tomorrow' Inspired By 'Underface' by Shel Silverstein
Location
Silverstein wrote a poem
I like to think just for me,
saying that who you are with others
isn't who you want to be.
He called it my Underface,
more than metaphorically.
It's not like my Outsideface.
There are just too many stories.
My mind runs wild with questions
that I think just to myself.
Asking, when I am alone,
am I truly myself?
When I'm by myself,
surrounded by four walls
I try to keep it mute.
I try to stay AWOL.
When I'm by myself,
I think and talk it over.
The only thing that keeps me quiet
is my music giving closure.
When I'm by myself,
I only let my sister in.
She may not know it yet,
but she's my bestfriend.
When I'm by myself,
I have scenarios,
running through my mind.
Whatever I say goes.
When I'm by myself,
I don't have to run and hide,
because there's no one to judge.
I wouldn't have to confide.
When I'm by myself,
I know I'm not the best.
But I believe that I can still outshine
all of the rest.
When I'm by myself,
I skip ahead in my mind.
There's no one to hold me back,
but I still worry about the time.
When I'm by myself,
I still talk to my mom,
like she's right beside me,
like she didn't leave home.
When I'm by myself,
I can get mad at all pink.
Angry how some survived,
although she fell off the brink.
When I’m by myself,
I praise all of the women.
Happy that the beast inside
didn’t overtake them.
But still when I'm by myself,
I still keep up an act,
that nothings even wrong.
I try to hold up the fact
that maybe I am happy
and it’s okay to lie,
to yourself,
when you say that you're just doing fine.
