Underneath This Smile

What lies behind her smile?

No one really knows the secrets locked away in her heart.

She smiles all day never missing a beat.

Can you see if there is sadness in her eyes?

Is her smile masking the pain of the life she must face?

Her home life full of pain from the words her family yells.

Does anyone see the tears she cries in her room all alone at night?

She faces each night with the hope for a better tomorrow.

Do you see her smiling as she reads a book or talks with friends?

Could you ever tell the insecurities eating away at her soul?

All the voices that surround her day in and out telling her she’s not good enough.

After all, how could she ever measure up to their standards?

Does anybody hear her cries for help in her eyes as all they ever notice is her smile?

She walks down the hall, head held high, seeming perfectly comfortable in her skin.

Every day she looks in the mirror wishing she was different, and for the pain to go away.

She wants to scream and be free from all that torments her in the night.

In her bed, she tosses and turns as the voice screams in her head telling her all that she isn’t.

She kneels down praying each night for God to bring her through one more day and heal her pain.

Does anybody see this child screaming for help every day, or do you only notice the smile she hides behind?
