The Tide Washes Away More Than Sand

The tide changes twice a day on most beaches
A gentle push and pull
Beckoned by the moons constant sway.

Our favorite dates
Were when we sat in the sand
Watching the waves caress the shore.
You always said
That the ocean loved the shore too much.
That’s why waves always came
only moments
between each embrace.
I always thought
That was beautiful.
A testament
To our love.

Months pass
And I still sit in the sand
Watching the waves
alone.

I think back to our time together
Sitting on this sand
Watching the waves.
And I noticed that you had it wrong.
That the waves roll over the shore
And eventually disappear
Back to the sea.
Leaving the shore
To wait for the next wave
That will hold it like the last.
And I thought about
How sad it is
To expect a wave to stay.

The tides change twice a day for most beaches
A constant push and pull
Caused by the moons sway.
