The Three Pronged Sword Pierces (But No One Sees)

She asked another girl to homecoming

…I’m jealous

Our classmates congratulate each of them

…I wonder,

And start to smile

Other students throw slurs and hatred

…I’m not surprised

He talks about his romantic date with some boy

…I listen

While pretending not to

Our classmates jeer at him when he’s not around

…I’m silent

I open my mouth to tell my parents

Who should love me forever and ever

(right?)

The news is blaring on the tv

Another state has joined the cry

To give equal rights to all

My dad sighs and says,

“Why are those people fighting for marriage anyways?”

…I turn away
