Spectrum

I never understood
How people can just pick and choose traits to see
and to ignore
As if I were a mere multiple choice question
and instead of all of the above, you only chose one answer
Sugar coated into your eyes, you were blind to only what you wanted

And some days it’s empowering to declare
“I am not my grades
or my test scores
or a black and white report card,
I am a spectrum
Of passions and inspiration and thoughts and I was meant to be more than this”

But when all I am asked is
“Where will you study?”
“What is your major?”
“How are your grades?”
“How will you pay?”
I feel diminished
and hopeless.

I want to succeed.
I want better for myself.
But in more ways than one
Not just financially or economically or socially
but spiritually,
creatively
Not to do things just because I can or I should
But
because I wanted to

I never understood
when I was told that I should reach for the stars
But not the ones from that galaxy.
