A Sea Surrounds Me

Location

This campus is a sea of perfection.

Waves of blonde haired individuals bob around with deep blue eyes floating underneath.

This sea is straight,

straight hair,

with straight slender bodies.

I am generously decorated in curls in almost every way this sea is not.

So obvious our differences.

I paddle out on my way to class,

mentally preparing to drop into the surge.

No car and far from shore I tread water until days end

and unlike the sea, I carry a full day's worth of supplies on my back.

I power about campus like oil in water;

My experiences are independent of this sea.

If I become overpowered by this sea I will swallow a salty mouthful and choke on what sets me apart,

inevitably sinking as the pressure of these beautiful waves turn to destructive forces.

I avoid drowning,

like I have done so before

like others have done so before.

I know somewhere in our ocean exists a sea that looks like me.

While this sea is perfectly straight, blonde, and blue

Mine is perfectly curly, dark, and brown.
