I am a bird that’s been dumped in a zoo

brightly colored, where everyone can see

an attraction, fluttering and new

A life given, a life taken from me

Others came with me, eyes of earth and sky

voices that drown out the numbness i feel

too many watching, unable to cry

put on a smile, or be their next meal.

Afraid to speak, every word comes out wrong

a sad bird, no longer able to sing

one bird left behind, he cries for her song

She has lost him, she has lost everything

the bird who was taken, is all alone

wishing she knew which road would lead back home
