The Promised Land

Location

Approaching five revolutions around the star

O'er the great pond- I flew

To a promised land of health and wealth

A land of independence

A land of your founding fathers

But not mine

A stranger to a patriotic stench

A living, breathing stereotype

I was an immigrant

Yes, to this country

But to this idea

This drowning of jingoism

An enemy in a field of red

A newcomer in a palace of white

A foreigner in a sea of blue

I was a child to this country

But a mother- it was not

It was a promised land

But nothing else

It promised me everything

And I am still fighting

Still reaching

Still flying

Across that same great pond
