Princesses and Their Peas

She can always see her princess-perfect heart shaped face in the window

Doe eyes just big enough to weigh down the organ she pretends is still her heart

But she knows, remembers, aches, because

Once upon a time

She had those “Once-upon-a-stars”

To cast “Once-upon-a-dreams”

They were all for her

As she gazed out those windows

She was seventeen years old

when the last of her heart dripped out its last glass tears

When he challenged her

“You can’t really be a princess, can you?”

Imperfects are always infinite under the microscope of royalty

Her skin too blotchy

Hair too big

Face too lopsided

And of course,

Her body is too loud

“You may only be my bride on one condition… Peas” He smirked

Clusters of peas toppled her plate at every meal

Scrambling together between her puzzle piece teeth

molding to mush in her mind

She was smushed under tree branch fingers of Him, The Prince

It wasn’t long until her sunken eyes saw that

Her dreams were just too sickeningly sweet

Now she dreams of peas and being skinny

She is haunted by the pea living under her mattress

She is restless, a deprived person

His eyes are magnetized by her emerald plate of peas

Never does he look up to her

“I think you’re beautiful, I don’t care what the others think. Maybe you need to start eating again” He mutters between licks of ice cream

As if that was a damn compliment

With every aching bone in her skeleton she lets out a blood shaking scream

Because her body will always be too loud
