Never forgotten is the past

Passing past memories is what keeps our past alive

Knowing where you have come from determines how well you’ll last

The world is sick with wicks of wicked people waiting for you to dive

The wicked hide behind badges and gadgets and leave no hope

To survive

It's a jungle, in every sense

Keep hope alive and pray to stay in present tense

We find being a statistic to be very easy to become

But it is we who must look at the past to prevent becoming

A victim

I feel as though it is very important for the Black people of today to look back towards the past to learn from the immense amount of racism that held presedence in the United States. While slavery may no longer exist, the foundation of racism that this country was built upon still does. This is prevalent in the amount of police brutaility cases, documented and undocumented, that have occurred over the past few decades. Institutional racism is something that may be nearly impossible to eradicate, however, it is the job of African Americans to treat this problem as if it is much more than a hashtag of #BlackLivesMatter, however, to fully put their knowledge of past pro-African American leaders and their teachigns on equailty to use. While not all cops have racist intentions, there is an increasing number of those that do. As African Americans, it is our duty to attempt to be more than our stereotypes or just another statistic, but instead, to aim to do something with our lives.
