My Four-Legged Hero

It was a warm April morning
We went out for a walk
Went out to that field of dreams
Sat down and began to talk.

You told me of your dream home
With places to run and play
I told you I would try my best
To get you that home someday

Weeks went by to no avail
Families came and went
And you stayed in those kennel walls
Feeling completely spent

That bad day came, decision made
I came to say goodbye
Sent you off to God with love
While I stayed back and cried.

Lessons learned, people forgiven
You taught me much in time
We need to live in the moment
And in this moment, you’re mine.
