Love Or Hate

Every time you look up at me towering over you,

Your almond shaped eyes seem to grow larger on your tiny face.

Like soulful puddles of warm chocolate,

They sparkle with a sort of knowing innocence.

The car signal turns scarlet,

And you reach your tiny hand to grab mine.

I take it,

Because I love you.

Every time you cook for me,

You talk to me.

Years seem to spin by,

As you look tiredly at me with my eyes.

You hug me,

As I sit on the countertop diligently doing my homework.

“We can’t afford it.”

I understand,

Because I love you.

You visit me every year without hesitation.

You don’t like leaving,

But you do for me.

You cook for me,

You talk to me,

You laugh and cry with me.

The clock in the corner of the cramped hospital room ticks.

Its ticks draw out longer and longer,

But no time can ever be enough.

You close your eyes forever.

Holding your hands,

I cry,

Because I love you.

Every time you look at me with those eyes full of red fury,

I shiver wishing I could brush of your gaze like the lint on my sweater.

Your hands touch me where I don’t want to be touched.

Your words assault me like your fists,

As they punch every breath of fresh air out of.

I choke with anger,

With disgust,

At your presence in front of me.

I push you away,

Because I don’t love you.

I hate you.
