Lavender and War

Tears, wet and salty dripping onto his shirt.

Her crying, cutting into his heart.

Hair, golden downy curls brushing against his cheek.

Her scent, a heavenly lavender aroma forever connected with the girl in his arms.

*

A shirt, wrinkled under her unsteady hands.

His heart, beating steadily beneath her ear.

A cheek, pressed gently on top of her head.

His arms, surrounding her as though he’d never let her go.

*

Hands, small and delicate fit inside of his.

Her ear, he whispers a soft goodbye in.

A forehead, smooth and silky under his lips.

Letting her go, the hardest thing he’s ever done.

*

His form, retreating away from her.

Into the night, he disappears from sight.

His lips, still lingering on her skin.

Done. Over. Their love is no more.

*

Her picture, tucked against his heart.

His sight, lined up with the target.

His skin, bleeding, burning, scaring.

No more days of joy – they’ve been stolen by war.

*

Her heart, searching for new love.

Her target, someone who won’t leave her again.

Her scars, now faded - a past memory.

The war, won’t steal her new sweetheart.

*

Love, keeps him sane all through the night.

Again, he takes shelter in the trenches.

Her memory, soothes his fears as the enemy advances.

Sweetheart, his sweetheart, he gave her up for this.

*

Night falls, brings another broken relationship.

Trenches in her heart, fill with broken dreams.

Advances made in love, failed.

This life, what is she doing wrong?

*

A relationship treasured, keeps him going through the day.

He dreams, of her sweetness, and prays for her safety.

He failed her, told her long ago to move on with life.

His love, will always belong to her.

*

Days go by, news comes troubling.

Safe and sound, he is not. MIA. Her heart breaks.

His life in danger, possibly gone.

Her prayers, increase on his behalf.

*

Troubling thoughts, race through his mind.

Breaks and bruises, are throughout his bones.

Gone, his comrades are dead, yet he is alive.

On behalf of his friends, he remains silent.

*

Her mind calculates, the days since that night.

When bones, were broken by words.

Alive, let him be alive, her love and best friend.

Silent, at dinner. Quiet, at lunch. Her thoughts are with him.

*

That night long ago, haunts him by day.

His words, sent his love away.

Best friend, had he lost her, was she married now?

With him, regrets. Always.

*

The day, brings news from overseas.

Away goes suspicions, her love has been found.

Now he is coming home.

Always, will this memory be.

*

Overseas, he travels, tried - forlorn.

Found at train station, by his mother

Home at last. But not home without her.

Be sad or happy, he was through with war

*

Forlorn, she sits in the parlor waiting.

His mother, comes to her and says

Without her love

The war would have killed him off.

*

Waiting, so much waiting.

He says, she will not come.

Love, echoes down the hallway

Off goes the doubt, on comes the light

*

Waiting, is finally put to rest.

She comes, into his room and sees him on the bed.

The hallway, is left for his mother to roam

The light of joy, is bursting in her heart.

*

Rest, he is at rest with her here by his side.

On the bed, she sits, her hand touching his face.

Roam, her eyes roam, over his broken body.

His heart will forever belong to her.

*

His side, his arms, he brings her tears

Touching his face, the room fills with her crying

His body, will heal, she caresses his hair

Her nose, inhales his masculine scent.

*

Tears, wet and salty dripping onto his shirt.

Her crying, cutting into his heart.

Hair, golden downy curls brushing against his cheek.

Her scent, a heavenly lavender aroma

*

A shirt, wrinkled under her unsteady hands.

His heart, she vows to take care of forever.

His cheek, she kisses with reverence and love.

Aroma of love, it fills the air

*

Hands joined, they make a promise

Forever, they will take care of and cherish each other

Love, they will do through good times and bad

The air, is filled with wedding bells.
