I Hear America Crying

I hear America crying.

Cries of war, cries of sadness.

Cries of hope, cries of madness.

I hear an eagle,

  a warning cry.

Sharp eyes watch us all.

I hear a hunter,

  a battle cry.

Our homes crumble and fall.

No longer does our dream, forgotten,

guide us victorious through the day.

I hear America crying.

I see America dying.

And yet, hope cries out in the desert,

in the cities and the plains.

A bell of peace in a bloody landscape.

Men and women,

enemy, friend.

Voices crying out for justice

and pleading each other for peace.

I hear America crying.

I hear it crying to to be free.
