Help Is Not Far

Location

Cuts are appearing,

And bruises are rising.

Still, I am denying

My friend's bearings.

Couldn't be that serious,

I thought.

She must have done something

To provoke the violence.

She avoided her friends,

Stopped calling or texting them,

Partied less on weekends,

But spent more time with him.

Cuts are appearing,

And bruises are rising.

Still, I am denying

My friend's bearings.

Why doesn't she just end it?

The ties to him must be strong,

Supporting the hope

That the relationship will last long.

Should I be involved in this?

Is it a private matter?

None of my business?

Or is it a crime with some serious

Consequences?

Cuts are appearing,

And bruises are rising.

Still, I am denying

My friend's bearings.

One day she said,

"He told me he doesn't like the way I talk

Or the way I walk.

He said I embarrass him.

Oh yeah, how is my dress?

My hair? Make-up?

... Do I really look like a mess?

Somewhere, I must have just screwed    up."

I looked at her thin face

And saw her eyes scream,

The fear,

She was trying to hide.

I died a little inside,

And that was when I decided

I would stop denying

And help my friend redeem.

If you would change

All that is wrong with you,

Who are you?

Who will you be?

If you should change

All that is wrong, you know,

There would be nothing

Left of you.

My friend is feeling better now.

She dumped the jerk.

And she is starting to regain

Some of her former perk.

Her smile every day,

Brightens everyone's life.

And she laughs much easier

Without all that strife.

Cuts are healing,

And bruises are sinking.

If he hates you

For who you are,

If he makes you

Feel uncomfortable.

Ask for help.

Help is not far.
