Forever has barely begun

You pressed your secrets into my skin
Like they were the most delicate of
Flowers, I
Put them between the pages of only my
Favorite books, and even then
Only the ones I knew you’d like
Only the ones that whisper pretty words
Like the content could turn your secrets
Into dainty things
You held your regrets like
The sharpest of blades
Pinched between finger and thumb
Drawing them down all visible veins
You said the spilled blood was just
A way to atone for your sins
Together we watched it swirl down
The drain, you
Said that was just this week’s payment
Said next week you’ll apologize, after
Your dog’s wide tongue against your face
Your bandages white seeping through with red
I told you I’d love you forever like it was a
Simple thing
I never thought twice about the feeling
I never thought you might
One day touch our memories
Like they themselves are razors
I open a book of prose
Your secrets flutter over my toes

This poem is about:
Me
My family
