Everything I Am

I am...

       in a shell,

               ever-evolving.

A piece of my shell cracks

open each day.

Once held down

by its surroundings,

'till enough time passed

for it to move.

         Now free.

Alone,

but not lonely.

For thou art with me.

Ntozake,

I found God in myself and I loved her too!

Walking this foggy path, life,

every day,

I don't see what's ahead of me.

                       HE guides my feet.

Journeying through a cold world,

I don't know the words to say.

                      HE guides my speech.

Knowing nothing

but knowing

surely, He loves me.

I am...

Like Chaka, like Whitney,

I am, every woman.

A singer,

therefore a portion of this page could not go unmarked

without the phrase:

                                I AM MUSIC.

A passionate fire ignites within,

lead by music of yesterday.

Songs for this old soul

passing the time a little faster,

a little slower.

Moving my feet further through this world.

Adding an extra beat to my heart;

changing its rhythm.

Music,

a gift fom God

that is immortal.

Often misused,

but with treasures I've found,

like Michael Jackson,

             like Lalah Hathaway,

                         like Stevie Wonder,

I can sing,

proudly on their shoulders;

no fear.

Legends I hold in mind,

I sing songs of past.

The timeless tunes

of  jazz, soul, rhythm and blues.

With a vocal thought,

to heal the world.
