Enough

We spend days on end trying to be enough.
What is enough?
Growing up we learn that enough is being attractive, intelligent, confident.
Enough is being independent.
We try to be everything our parents want us to be.
We try to learn and participate to be enough to our teachers.
We try to look and be on top of our social media game for our peers.
For those people we call our friends.
Do you ever just try your best for yourself?
Do not say that if you are enough for others,
you are enough for yourself.
Whether you admit it or not,
we have all had the same thought.

Do me a favor.
Don’t apologize now or ever.
Because we are criticized on a daily basis.
That mirror that tells you that you are not pretty enough.
Those colleges who say your grades are not enough.
The internet users who say that our struggles are not enough,
because there are others who struggle more.
We are our biggest academy.
Take those comments about your looks and about the way you think.
You take it, go home, cry, then you try and fix yourself.
Fix whatever it was to be enough.

There are things that you and I don’t realize.
We can try to improve ourselves,
we can try to “glo up”,
but there are things that we can spend so much of our time trying to fix,
yet nothing changes. Why?
Because those are the things that make us. Us.
We are criticized on the small things.
You are criticized on the way you tend to get a little too excited for something like a kid in a candy store.
but that makes you. You.
So, do me a favor and don’t apologize for something you cannot change.
Do not apologize for being you.

I would apologize for trying too hard,
for not wanting to try at all sometimes,
or for being too caring and wanting to help everyone.
I would apologize to my parents for not being everything they wanted me to be.
I would apologize to my teachers for not doing enough.
I would apologize to you and my friends,
for the way I present myself through my actions and my words.
I would apologize for not being enough,
but I am going to stop myself here.
Because I should only have to be enough for myself.
