Different
Not insufficient
Simply different.
Tucked tightly within complex minds,
Minds which worked differently than most.
Minds that were not understood by most.
Some of the most intelligent people,
But were the most modest,
Being as they were often unable to convey their unique intellect
To those of us with the “normal” thought process.
They’re put in special classrooms,
With different teachers,
With different assignments and tests and grading.
The mind of an elementary-aged child
But the intelligence of an Einstein.
The positive attitudes
And the minimal concerns.
They don’t care about society’s norms
Or proper etiquette.
There’s no “woman’s” or “man’s” place in the home.
It’s more of a travesty when their parents say it’s time to grow up
Than the start of the Third World War would be.
Wouldn’t it be nice?
To have the bravery and compassion and non-judgmental mindset
Of those who are considered disabled?
For it is they
Who enable the rest of us.
