The Child Who Smiled

She is a child

A child who smiles

And this smiling child can smile for a while

But there is something off about this child’s smile

It looks like she turned up her happy dial

Too far

But she looks so happy

Going through the day with glee

But that's the real her that you see

That's her other personality

She is a child

A child who smiles

And this smiling child will smile for a while

Until

The stars start to fade

Along with the day

And her demons come out to play

Along with the hateful thing people say

She just wants it all to go away

She enters her home

She's surrounded but still alone

And she doesn't know

If she's safe

Not from others

But from her head

This endless war that keeps her up in bed

She thought there was one way to make the pain end

She was a child

A child who smiled

And that smile did only last for a while

She listened to every word they said

She let her tears shed

As her wrists bled

The last thing she saw was red

And before you knew it, she was dead

Yes dead

Every hurtful thing you said

Was forever burned in her head

And all of you can take cred-it

For you had said-it

That rumor you spred-ed

All of this led

To her being dead

She was a child

A child who smiled

And that smile hid a lot for a while

It hid the fact that she was afraid

She was never truly brave

But she took all of that to her grave

If only she was saved

And if only they

Knew that words hurt

More than any other pain

But they thought of it as a game

Well this is one nobody wants to play

She was a child

A child who smiled

All the way to her grave
