Brown Eyes

Some might say the color brown is boring,

bland,

too close to black,

but if you knew, you would understand;

because it’s the color of his eyes.

They’re not just ‘brown’.

They’re far from boring or bland,

they’re the color of melted dark chocolate

and the stuffed teddy bear you slept every night with all throughout your childhood.

It might seem like plain color,

but let me ask you:

have you ever seen brown eyes in the sun?

You don’t always notice it at first,

until you’re close enough to touch the curve of his chin with your fingertips;

you’ll see that ‘brown’ no longer describes them.

They liquefy into golden rays, circling an eclipse.

There’s nothing boring about brown eyes, not even when the later hours fall

and you’re lying with him and he glances at you and has that look on his face

like you’re the only girl in the entire world, they just turn into a sunset of their own.
