Boston Marathon sweat soaking

Boston Marathon

sweat soaking through my clothes

heart pumping through the strain

sneakers thud on pavement

cold air kisses hot skin

almost there, nearly through

filled with pride and exhaustion

needing water, wanting rest

but surely it will be worth it

finish ahead, I can see it

euphoria interrupted

eardrums burst with sound

eyes burn with smoke

screams in the air

confusion, and then pain

pain in limbs and flesh

what is this? why?

faces frozen in shock

my family, where are they?

searching through chaos

where are you? why?

find them in the crowd

great relief

why?

collapse into your arms

who did this?

why?
