The American Dream is Dead

Tue, 04/07/2015 - 00:42 -- Igloo61

Work for hours with minimal pay

then beg for more like a mindless stray.

Far away in a foreign land

pulling crops all day by hand.

You’ll miss your children, their beautiful voice

and wonder if this was the right choice.

Your loved ones, this sacrifice is for them,

they are worth more than any gem.

You’ll continuously chase the american dream

and sleep in a room that’s bursting at the seams.

Keep your head down, don’t speak, don’t misbehave

You’re the twenty first century slave.

The door is open, that’s what they say,

but if we catch you, you’ll pay.

You will be our next deportee.

Long live the land of the free!

Hi Igloo61,

I work for Westermann Gruppe, an educational publisher in Germany. We would like to use your poem in our upcoming textbook, Camden Town Advanced USA. The book is aimed at proficient learners of English as a foreign language, and has life in the States as its central theme. Your poem would feature in a chapter on the American dream - our authors will come up with questions to accompany the poem. Would you be interested in giving us permission to print your work in our book?

Best wishes,

Jonathan
